The MTV Video Music Awards 2025, held at New York’s UBS Arena, was remembered not only for its musical performances and winners but also for the messages directed at the LGBTQ+ community. One of the stars of the night, Ariana Grande, while accepting the Best Pop award, said “thank you to my therapist and gay people,” a moment that quickly spread on social media.
With her video Brighter Days Ahead, she went on to win not only this category but also Video of the Year and Best Long Form Video, becoming one of the night’s biggest winners.
Another standout moment of the evening came from Sabrina Carpenter’s performance. While singing Tears, she turned the stage into a march-like atmosphere. Drag performers, including the famous Honey Balenciaga, joined her on stage, while placards writing “Protect trans rights,” “Support local drag,” and “Love each other” appeared in the background. Carpenter’s act was widely seen as a direct gesture of support for the trans and drag communities.
One of the most emotional and theatrical performances of the night came from Conan Gray, who sang Vodka Cranberryalongside actor Corey Fogelmanis in a staging reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet. Inspired by their close friendship, the presentation gave additional visibility to LGBTQ+ love stories.
The red carpet also did not go unnoticed for its LGBTQ+ stars. Doja Cat drew attention with a retro 1980s-inspired look,

while Ricky Martin sparked social media discussion with a bold outfit that left his chest exposed.

Actress and comedian Meg Stalter brought a humorous touch with an outfit referencing Dunkin’,

and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Symone stood out with her distinctive style.

Designer and stylist Marko Monroe, known for his custom Labubu couture and a member of the House of Avalon, appeared on the VMAs 2025 red carpet in a JW Anderson shirt paired with a specially crafted “Moonbubu.”

VMAs 2025 was thus marked as a night where both music and social messages came to the forefront. Ariana Grande’s words of gratitude to gay people, Sabrina Carpenter bringing trans rights to the stage, Conan Gray and Corey Fogelmanis’ romantic performance, and the red carpet looks of LGBTQ+ stars turned this award ceremony into not just entertainment but also a platform engaging with social issues.
