The first case of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in Azerbaijan was recorded in 1987. From 1987 through the end of the second quarter of 2025, a total of 11,058 Azerbaijani citizens have been officially registered at the Republican AIDS Control Center under the Ministry of Health.
APA reports that this information was shared by Günel Babayeva, Head of the Monitoring and Evaluation Department of the Republican AIDS Control Center of the Ministry of Health.
According to her, 70 percent of the registered people living with HIV are men, while 30 percent are women.
It was also reported that within the framework of the antiretroviral treatment program implemented in the country since 2006, more than 10,000 people living with HIV are currently under continuous medical supervision and treatment. This treatment not only prevents the progression of the infection but also reduces the viral load in the blood to undetectable levels, thereby minimizing the risk of transmission.
